Video Editing Information for beginners

VIDEO EDITING and THE VIDEO EDITING PROCESS  (general information and explanation)
 -by Timothy K.

Before you choose a video production company or video editing company to do your project, education on this subject will make it easier for the communication between you and the company you choose.

-I thought I would start the day by explaining and going through a subject that the general population does not understand.   And just like quantum physics, unless you are trained in that field...how could you possible know anything about it, except what our media says about.   "Oh, you have an iphone and a editing app...you can make a movie"   No, not even close.

-Another misconception is that once you shoot video or film, the footage comes out in a fully produced video and that is it.   This is also not even close to the truth.

Let me explain in as few words as I can.

Video editing/post production is the process after or during the filming and video taking place.  This is where the Video/Film Files and cuts and takes (or anytime the start and stop button is pushed on the camera) is put into a computer into Digital Video Files.   They are generally all seperate and depending on how good your production assistant is, they all have to be looked at one by one.  This Video editing process is by far the most time consuming, expensive and if you need or are looking for graphics, most high end or (profitable) graphics are done in seperate programming called Special effects programs.   Usually Adobe After Effects or Maxon Cinema 4D or Apple Motion.   Most Video Editing Software can only produce lower end graphics or more general effects.   We make all of our graphics, text and special effects on high end special effects programming (Adobe After Effects, Maxon Cinema 4D and 4D Maya.  Sometimes AutoCad and programs of that nature, so you can see just from this, doing a simple video is not nearly as easy as it looks.

Below is a Very General Description of Video editing and Post production.  This does not include the Motion graphics, text fx and special animations portion.  I will have another blog about that after this one.

Special Note:   For anyone filming their own footage, MAKE SURE YOU FILM IT ALL IN THE SAME FRAME SIZE like (1920x1080 which is full HD) and at the same frame rate 24fps, 30fps are the most commonly used ones.   If you film at different frame sizes, and frame rates it makes it very difficult on video editors to make a Video that flows correctly.   If you dont know what this is, please take time to research it on google or yahoo or bing.   This is soooo important!

-What is Video Editing? (Post Production?)

Video editing is the process of manipulating and rearranging video shots to create a new work. Editing is usually considered to be one part of the post production process — other post-production tasks include titling, colour correction, sound mixing, etc. Many people use the term editing to describe all their post-production work, especially in non-professional situations. Whether or not you choose to be picky about terminology is up to you. In this tutorial we are reasonably liberal with our terminology and we use the word editing to mean any of the following:Rearranging, adding and/or removing sections of video clips and/or audio clips. Applying colour correction, filters and other enhancements. Creating transitions between clips.
1. The heart of video post production is editing. Generally speaking, “post production” is anything after the shoot and voice recording sessions. All the elements have been acquired, and now the puzzle must be assembled. Unlike a pre-set puzzle, though, this one is always freeform and requires an artist to bring the various elements together in a way that not only works logically and emotionally, but also serves to deliver your important message in the most efficient way.

2. Editing is much more than just sticking bits of video and audio together in a line. A great editor can bring footage to life in a manner that an average competent editor just cannot do. This is because editing is an intuitive art form that has to be learned over years of handling footage and making the right decisions by learning from past mistakes. An artful, excellent edit can bring average or even sub-par raw footage to life and rescue an otherwise dull program.

3. The first stage of the edit process will be for the editor to go through the various raw footage sources and “digitize” them into the computer memory, making them available as virtual “clips” to choose from. Then, an initial or rough edit will be made with just the raw video set against the voice track and music. This is important because the audio establishes the timing of everything and many video edit decisions are based closely on the audio elements.

4. Once done, this initial edit will be taken into another stage where graphics, special effects, and other design elements are added.

I hope that is a good start for anyone just trying to get a jump start on this subject.
